Once Twas Blind …

Well, damn. I thought I was going nuts. It turns out that someone borrowed my machine and felt the need to turn down the brightness.

This is a quick way to death, I tell you. Quick, yet painful.

Now I can read hard-to-read sites again. I thought I might be going blind …

Four entries in fifteen minutes.

Can you tell that all the caffeine I ingested to calm my asthma has me just a skosh hyperactive this morning? Can you? Huh huh huh? :p

Friday Five-ish

Once more, the Friday Five:

1. If you could eat dinner with and “get to know” one famous person (living or dead), who would you choose? Tough call. I’ll throw everyone a curve and say Barry Bonds. I’d like to check my gut feeling that he really is an okay guy.

2. Has the death of a famous person ever had an effect on you? Who was it and how did you feel? No.

3. If you could BE a famous person for 24 hours, who would you choose? I’m already famous. What the hell’s your problem? :)

4. Do people ever tell you that you look like someone famous? Who? Oh, it varies. Chris Farley. Willam from Mall Rats. Fred Flintstone. The list goes on and on …

5. Have you ever met anyone famous? Yeah, my photo of me and Trent Lott hangs on my wall at home. I’ve met lots of other famous [and infamous] people, but I only have the photo with ol’ Trent.

This is an interesting, if foofy, idea to play around with. Might be bored today and dinky-dink-dink around with it.

Today Officially Sucks

I’d like to shoot myself for stupidity. I played with the catzillas last night out at Amy and Jeff’s house. I didn’t scrub up when I got home. As a result, it was 11:00 before my asthma calmed down to a point that I felt like I could leave the house without wanting to die. My night included a Waffle House run at 0230 because I couldn’t sleep, was unreasonably hungry [after all, Amy's red beans and rice had left me feeling rather sated], and needed the caffeine to clear my lungs.

Oh well. I got to watch Israel invade the Palestinian Authority’s domain this morning, live on CNN and Fox New Channel. Hmmmmm…

Reason #571 Why I Hate the Death Penalty

Okay, I’ve bitched about the death penalty before. [Here and here, if you missed it.] But let’s queue up our Attorney General and see what he has to say about why the Feds are going to try to stick Zacarias Moussaoui in the arm with some bad drugs if they get a chance:

“Among these reasons was the impact of the crime on thousands of victims,” Ashcroft said. “We are committed not only to carrying out justice in this case but also to ensure that the rights of the victims are protected.”

Hm. Justice is killing a man? The victims have a right to see him die? Whatever, Johnny.

No Bloggy?

Ya know, I’ve been here all day. Have I written an entry? Nope. Have I been working? Not much. Haven’t been bored, though; spent the morning talking to Amy, Heather, Kat, and Noah over ICQ, and now the afternoon talking to Sean and Tiff. Oh, and talking to the Todder all damn day at random intervals.

Heh.

Major League Baseball gets cranked up on Monday. If you’re like me, you’re ready to ignore Czar Bud and watch the players on the field.

If so, check out this article by Jim Caple on Game Seven of the 2001 World Series. I’d love for ESPN Classic to show that sometime between now and Monday …

Wondergeeks now shows the most recent comments for geek-chick.

It’s all a part of plan for world domination. Muhahahhaahhahahahaahhahahahaahhaahhaha.

Can you tell I’m bored at work and didn’t sleep enough last night? See, Todd, Sarah, and I went back to the house after goofing off over at Johnson [where they build the concrete canoe at UAH] to watch Major Payne. Todd gave up and went to bed about midnight, but Sarah and I stuck it out … which meant we were both up until 1:20 or so. It was like 2:00 before I could go to sleep, and I kept waking up all night long.

Dammit. Oh well. I just need to go get some caffeine …

Are You A Slacker?

-snort- I had to take this test. If you don’t know why, you aren’t paying attention to the context clues. :)

To quote: “You little slacker, you! You have a well-developed sense of how NOT to get things done, but you’re not the least-motivated kid on the block. You make at least some attempt to work efficiently. As a demi-slacker, you definitely operate on your own schedule. Today means tomorrow, and tomorrow means next week. You’ll get the job done eventually, but no one’s holding their breath. Your friends and coworkers probably don’t rely on you to be punctual or finish time-sensitive projects. If they do, it’s their own darn fault, right? There are some benefits to being a part-time slacker: you rarely feel rushed, and you most likely lead a stress-free life. Plus, you accomplish more than the full-on slacker! The downside is that your work, social, and personal life might suffer from your consistent anything-goes attitude. If they do, it’s time to make a change. If they don’t, there’s no immediate need to fix anything.”

It’s funny … I get stuff for other folks done on time [usually]. But if it’s just for me …

D’oh!

Well, when they fixed my CD-ROM problem earlier, they also fudged my file sharing … and considering that I manage schedules that about 20 people use from my machine, that’s no good. Took until this afternoon to figure it out … and people aren’t always seeing my machine on the network, either.

Frustrating as HELL.

Fun Fun Fun!

On the advice of Lynda, I decided to see if I could POP email from my IJSM.org account through the firewall.

I can. WOOHOO! I can ignore the mail when I have work to do, but it’s nice to have the access during the day. There are so many times during the day that I’ve wished I had access here at work, mainly so I can prune the email volume I get during a normal day [mainly from the staff email list @ USCHO.com].

Sooooooo cool. Why didn’t I do this before?

Just so you know, Adam Dunn is going to be my favorite ballplayer in the oughts. Why? Here’s why.

This kid is something. Makes me proud to be a Reds fan.

Really.

I mean it.

Just piss on ‘em.

They had the right idea–make Carl Pohlad, who’s rich as hell, pay for his own damn park, thankyouverymuch–but they caved when ol’ Bud Selig threatened to buy back the franchise this winter. How’d they cave? The state Leg has passed a stadium bill that does the following: “The state would sell $330 million in taxable revenue bonds to build an open-air stadium in an unspecified city. The Twins and the private sector would make a tax-deductible $165 million gift to a state fund that the proposal’s architect believes could earn more in interest than the rate due on the 30-year bonds. Surplus money in a Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission account — some $15 million — also would go into the fund.

The only direct state subsidy is a sales-tax exemption on construction supplies, an incentive valued at $10 million.” [Quote from the linked story, without permission, ©2002 ESPN Internet Ventures and the Associated Press.]

The best quote is this one, from Rep. Mike Osskopp: “All we’re doing is reinforcing that extortion works.”

Yep.

Heaven’s Gate Revisited

Remember Heaven’s Gate, that group of foofy cultists who thought they could commit suicide and be picked up by a spaceship trailing along in the wake of Hale-Bopp? Turns out the one guy who left before the suicide wants to cash in on the cult and have them remembered. He’s selling the Ford van they used all the time … on eBay. His reserve is $39,000.

Mind you, I like Ford’s big vans. But $39 large? Right. Only if Jesus Christ himself rolled in it down the Vegas strip, baybee.

I’d not make fun of cultists, but some times, it’s just tooooooo darn easy.

I Am SUCH a DORK!

What’s worse — being in a classroom on Saturday during Spring Break, or at work at 10:15 p.m. one night during Spring Break? Hrmmmmmmmmm …

Had to do a fantasy baseball draft. Feel like I did well. Here, I knew I had a good connection. Here, I knew I could work quietly. Sure. There’s maybe five people in the building. I’m probably the only engineer in here.

Funny, I can call myself an engineer now and not snicker. -blink- That’s just toooooooo weird.

My computer is working here again. They got things going. So I’m listening to MP3’s on my nice nifty MP3 player. I need to see if Sean and I can find some memory cards for our identical players before he leaves CompUSA … I can expand to like 192MB of filespace, which is more than I’ll ever want for this thing, because it’s mainly going to see use at the gym.

Yes, the gym. Headed there after work tomorrow, probably. I played Ultimate Frisbee with the kids at church today, which was my workout for the day. But I have to get my lard butt back in the gym. Might as well start now.

Off for home. I’m going to be depressed if I sit here much longer.

I want to hate myself right now. The only people in the building are me and the Robot Car weenies across the hall.

So Starts Spring Break

Well, my Spring Break begins now. On tap:

Sleep.

Stress relief.

Computer fixing.

Cleaning.

Stereo installation.

More sleep.

Ta ta for now. I’m off to the county to go play with the catz. Y’all’uns have a good weekend.

Showing Love

Well, today’s my day to go out to the Geek Country Estate and go play with the cats.

Pardon me while I chuckle a bit at this thought.

Sean and Kat are headed out in the morning [maybe tonight, who knows] to Atlanta to get on a plane to Boston. They’re going skiing with her brother and his girlfriend, generally futzing around and enjoying a vacation. I’m glad for them to go–Kat’s class stuff has kept her too far from Sean of late, and it’s Away From Huntsville[TM]. Good.

However, Kitty Sitting Duty has been rotating between Jeremy and Kat. With Kat gone, I get to go play with Edmund and Tenzing. I’m actually going to enjoy this–they’re pretty cool, for cats. But the irony of a guy who’s not totally in love with cats, mainly due to his allergies to them, going across the county to go take care of two cats who no doubt really miss their parents isn’t lost on me.

But today, it’s the only way I can show my love for Jeff and Amy in this time for them. -sigh- It’s the little things, though. Maybe a little kitty-lovin’ on Tenzing will help him to not be so manic when they get back. Ed, I know, is going to be a lost cause–he’ll only respond to Amy. I know they’re going to all need each other when they get back, though, so it’s good. So, I guess if I can’t hug Amy or Jeff right now, the least I can do is hug their cats, play with them, make sure they’re good and fed and watered, and run ‘em around the house a little. It’s not much, but it’s something.

Friday Five-ish

Well, I missed last week’s because I was on the road, and I’m bored at work, so … the ff:

1. What is your favorite time of year? Spring. It’s about renewal.

2. What is it about your favorite season that, well, makes it your favorite season? Things grow. It gets warmer. Love happens. Yadda.

3. What is your least favorite time of year? Why? You know, I don’t hate the other three seasons. I just like spring better.

4. Do you do anything to celebrate or recognize the changing of seasons? Nah. That would require planning.

5. What’s your favorite thing to do outside? Just hanging out with friends, though I’d love to go whitewater rafting again.
