Sam Ruby’s Temporary Subscriptions

We all know that I’m a sucker for talking about comment feeds. You sholdn’t be surprised, then, that I geeked out when I saw Sam Ruby’s suggestion: temporary feeds.

I’ve decided to only offer per comment feeds for a period of 90 days after the last comment has been received on any given entry. After which point, the autodiscovery link and the common feed icon will be removed from the page for that entry, and any attempt to fetch the feed will return an HTTP 410 Gone status code.

Now that makes me all intertwingly. ;) The comments are, at the time of posting, all good; there are some good ideas being bandied about by some smart folks. I’m not saying that Sam’s solution here is the best one, but it’s a great starting point for a discussion that needs to be made.
