It’s not just Flickr joining up with Yahoo! Maps, Upcoming is all in the new game, too.
Flickr Photos for Events
Flickr and Upcoming taste great together! After many requests, we finally have photos for events! Tag your Flickr photos with the special Upcoming tag on every event page, and they’ll automatically show up on Upcoming (example). (We have some neat ideas how to use these photos, once it gets more popular. Stay tuned.)
Also, Flickr will automatically add a link back to the Upcoming event from each of your tagged Flickr photos. Big thanks to Kellan and George on the Flickr team for pulling it off.
They make it really, really easy: a simple upcoming tag on Flickr allows the Upcoming page to marry up with photos you’ve taken. So, what did I do? I added those tags in the Organizr real fast, and in a half-hour or so, all those old Upcoming events will show the photos I took. Now, you may ask, “Who the hell is going to look back at Geof’s old Upcoming entries?” I say, “Yahoo! just gave folks a reason to do so.”
Now what Yahoo! needs to do is to come up with a way to bring del.icio.us into the fold: for example, if I bootleg the show and put it on a BitTorrent tracker, let me tag the tracker’s info page on del.icio.us with an Upcoming-related tag, and BOOM! People can find my bootleg.
Can/will this be tag-spammed? Yes, yes. But if I can, for example, tell Upcoming that I was at the show, post photos to Flickr that indicate that I was there, and can tag things in del.icio.us—remember, these are all Yahoo! properties, so I should be able to verify identity across the plane—I can bring things together.
