Square Pegs in the Round

I’ve been remiss in posting about photos I’ve taken at concerts recently … I took a whackload of photos on Tuesday night, and these are the ones that I liked enough to post. This is probably one of my favorites: I was seated maybe a foot back from the stage—no really, that’s me with the camera (photo courtesy Andrew Osenga)—so I was able to leverage having an f1.8/50 mm.

Mmmm … depth of field.

[Okay, so all the real photographers who read IJSM are undoubtedly laughing at me and shaking their heads. Dammit, Jim, I'm an engineer, not a photographer!]

Anyhow … been shooting more, having fun doing it, and generally loving it.

Rescue Me: A Fourth Season!

So yes, my little entry on Season Three of Rescue Me made it a whole season without spoilers being posted in the comments, even after the finale on Tuesday. [My feelings on that? They largely mirror Jonathan Toomey's [warning: there be spoilers!]: not enough resolution, other than the obvious ones you’d expect. They hit the three main A-lines and sorta left the B-lines askew. Unlike Toomey, however, I want Tommy and Janet together. Yes, that might make the show jump the shark, but honestly … this show probably doesn’t have 100 episodes in it without major cast overhauls.]

But enough about Season Three: so that everyone who comes here for Rescue Me news knows, our beloved show will indeed get a fourth season.

Upcoming and Flickr …?!

Looks like all the back-tagging of stuff I’ve done hasn’t worked so well: Flickr recognizes the tags towards Upcoming, as here in my example, but if you go to the corresponding Upcoming event, it’s not been spidered. Even worse, surfing via that Upcoming-oriented Flickr tag merits … nothin’. [If you’ll look, every photo I posted in my set from the Mercy Lounge show is tagged appropriately.

Great concept, but … one out of three is bad. :(

Upcoming and Flickr, too!

It’s not just Flickr joining up with Yahoo! Maps, Upcoming is all in the new game, too.

Flickr Photos for Events

Flickr and Upcoming taste great together! After many requests, we finally have photos for events! Tag your Flickr photos with the special Upcoming tag on every event page, and they’ll automatically show up on Upcoming (example). (We have some neat ideas how to use these photos, once it gets more popular. Stay tuned.)

Also, Flickr will automatically add a link back to the Upcoming event from each of your tagged Flickr photos. Big thanks to Kellan and George on the Flickr team for pulling it off.

They make it really, really easy: a simple upcoming tag on Flickr allows the Upcoming page to marry up with photos you’ve taken. So, what did I do? I added those tags in the Organizr real fast, and in a half-hour or so, all those old Upcoming events will show the photos I took. Now, you may ask, “Who the hell is going to look back at Geof’s old Upcoming entries?” I say, “Yahoo! just gave folks a reason to do so.”

Now what Yahoo! needs to do is to come up with a way to bring del.icio.us into the fold: for example, if I bootleg the show and put it on a BitTorrent tracker, let me tag the tracker’s info page on del.icio.us with an Upcoming-related tag, and BOOM! People can find my bootleg.

Can/will this be tag-spammed? Yes, yes. But if I can, for example, tell Upcoming that I was at the show, post photos to Flickr that indicate that I was there, and can tag things in del.icio.us—remember, these are all Yahoo! properties, so I should be able to verify identity across the plane—I can bring things together.

Flickr Adds Geotagging

If you’re thinking geotagging of Flickr photos doesn’t make me flip out, you’re wrong. This is … really awesome.

Geof’s New Music: 27 Aug-2 Sep 2006

This week, I have a couple new albums outside my standard fare, as well as one of my own hand-recorded bootlegs [one that, sadly, I'm not that happy with]:

Last week was Square Peg-riffic:

Digging Out

Well, you get the point from looking at the thin archives this week that I’ve been dang busy, and if you look around, you’ll even figure out why. Suffice it to say that it’s been crazy. In amongst all the fun, I’ve come down with one of my biennial cases of otitis externa, which has me down from stereo to mono. Not-so-fun times. Thankfully, I have good medication in-hand for dealing with it. I’ll be back and kicking soon. Meanwhile, I’m digging out the 3000+ feed items that had accrued since my half-hearted pass through FeedLounge on Monday.

I was here at the office until 2200 last night, and I’m here for who knows how long today.

I’ll come up for air on the weekend…

Geof’s New Music: 20-26 Aug 2006

This week has a far smaller volume of music than the usual ones. I’ve come to the realization than I can dump 5-10 bootlegs at myself if I already know the artist well and am, essentially, just looking for awesome performances of songs I already like. When I get to new CDs, though, I need to slow down. I have four new discs sitting in my queue, so I’ll do two this week and two next:

Last week, I churned through a bunch of bootlegs, but I only really loved a couple of them:

Fifteen Days of Awesome

Last night was the first in a series of three straight Square Peg Alliance shows at the Radio Cafe in Nashville. Saturday, Caedmon’s plays MSMSMUW, and Rick and I (and maybe Jon!) are going.

I think this trumps last year’s Eight Days of Awesome.

Limitations of the del.icio.us Firefox extension

Earlier today, I noticed that some of the commentary on my links got cut off. I came to find out that it happened between the time I posted the commentary using del.icio.us’s Firefox extension and the commit to the server.

Now, it makes sense for del.icio.us to limit the size of the data stored in the Notes field: data has to be stored, and you’ve got to scale. [That, and I'm sure spammers would fill it full of shit if they were granted the space.] But what I don’t get is why the FF extension doesn’t make that obvious to me: some Javascript to tell me how many characters I have left would be awesome. Knowing the constraints, I’ll omit unnecessary words.
