Technology, I Am SO OVER YOU

Today has not been my day, technology-wise. More appropriately, my evening hasn’t gone well.

My first issue came as I got out of the car at my corner drugstore. I pulled my iPod nano out of my pocket, having had it in there all day. Why did I put it in my pocket? Well, I’d found it in the passenger seat of the car yesterday, and I had put it in the boot around the shifter to ride around. But I decided today at work that it needed to be in my pants pocket and, presumably, safer.

Yeah, except for the part where I inadvertently cracked the LCD at some point during the day. I can think of a couple points during the day where I did it, but … whatever. It’s borked.

Much swearing later, I’d largely forgotten about it [and about blogging about it ... I already angrily Twittered about it] when I hit snafu #2: I’m editing up the page and the song vault for Derek Webb’s The Ringing Bell when suddenly … I am unable to access the server. I panic and pop open Terminal to SSH in. I get no response from the node. Suddenly, I realize that all the saving and auto-saving going on had to have tripped the mod_security filter, locking out my IP. Hoo boy, that was a panicky feeling.

I hopped over to Adium and played “What user do I trust to be root for 90 seconds?” roulette, settling on Rae Whitlock, who is a professional and an all-around great guy. He chuckles at and laments my predicament [hell, I was laughing at it after five seconds], then hooks into WHM to add my IP on the firewall’s whitelist … a few seconds later, and I’m back in the game. I of course proceeded to quickly logged in via SSH and changed the password. It’s not that I don’t trust Rae, because clearly I do, but I knew I had to change it. I’d change it if I had called Dad over the phone and walked him through changing it for me. What a shame, though … I had to waste a really strong password—IhMlBpAcI2M, using the opening line to M. Ward’s “Right in the Head” off of Post-War and my password-generating cipher—because the firewall is a hair light to the touch. :sigh:

It’s okay, technology … I may hate you tonight, but I’m co-dependent and I’ll be all about you come morning.

‘Twas an adventure, indeed, being root for a (very) short season.

I’ve been there, man. Totally been there. I totally feel your pain. I can’t the number of times I’ve blocked myself with a bad firewall rule or a bad Cisco ACL line.

    mod_security Hook Into Firewall Re-enabled…

Previously, I was having issues with the hair-trigger sensitivity of mod_security feeding into the firewall causing access problems for legitimate users of the server. [Heck, Monday night, I got locked out my own self.] That said, we’re being h…
