Geof’s New Music: 27 May-2 Jun 2007

I resisted getting Wilco’s new album for a while, because I really didn’t think that I’d like it. But then I got mad at myself, because I’m the very same person that criticizes people for putting musician friends of mine in a box and wanting them to stay there, musically, and that’s exactly what I was trying to do to Wilco. So I shut up and bought the CD.

Last week, on the whole, was excellent.

Happy Anniversary, Kings!

Jessica off-handedly mentioned it yesterday, but today is the Kings’ fourth anniversary. One would think that such a date would be easy to remember for me, seeing as, well, I was kinda there, but it’s made far easier by the fact that they got married on the same day, six years later, that I graduated from high school. Chances are that you don’t have to be an MSMS grad to figure out that I graduated high school a decade ago. Oi. No wonder I feel old today. ;) [Couldn't have anything to do with driving 1400 miles last weekend.]

But anyway … happy anniversary to some of my favorite people.

The CW Is Dead to Me

Between the ending of Gilmore Girls and the cancellation of Veronica Mars, the only CW show that I watch is Beauty and the Geek. I have decided, however, to take a principled stand: if they were going to cancel VM—GG ended of its own accord—I was going to quit watching B&tG. As such, my TiVos are now set to fully ignore the local CW affiliate.

You might think I’m crazy. I’m just a drop in the bucket. But in kowtowing more to the bottom line—the short-term point of view—than the quality of the shows on the channel—the long-term point of view—the CW convinced me that they’re not worth my time.

If nothing else, it makes me feel better, which is typically 90% of the point of protests anyway. Besides, everyone needs something to be visibly and viscerally angry about, if for no other reason than to vent pent-up aggressions that otherwise eat at the body. Certainly none of the underlying problems are solved, but sometimes, you gotta whomp on something to get over it.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to find Clarence Weidman’s number to have him do a little “business” for me.

Quick Hits

While waiting for a telecon to kick off:

  1. I sold Darlene last night. When my folks bought that truck, it had 28,303 miles. When I titled it over to my friend last night, it had 191,061. Ten years, eight months, and five days. Plenty of good times. Most of those 160k+ miles were solo, though. I’m very much a solo road-tripper, and it really only sat two anyway.
  2. I have scheduled my nervous breakdown vacation for the week of 2-6 Jul 2007. Unless something really, really exciting crops up, I will probably spend it at home, sleeping in every day and generally not doing crap. Oh, and not taking any calls from work. I counted it up earlier this morning, and outside of all the family stuff I did in January, the last time I had two consecutive open-for-business days off was last May. The last time I’ve taken a full week off? Four or five years ago. Yeah, I’m due.
  3. Oh, yes, I recognize that I’m copping out by taking what’s certainly going to be the easiest week to have off as a NASA contractor this summer. Before you swear at me, my response is that I’m so covered up right now that I’m taking that week off purely because it won’t be so damn painful when I come back from vacation. Nothing sucks worse than being out of pocket for a few days and coming back to everything on fire. [See also: last week.]
  4. I have dropped ten pounds in the last three months. I need a long string of quarters like that in a row, but I’ll take it.

Telecon time.

It wasn’t the best-kept secret ever, but … Derek Webb recorded with Caedmon’s Call for their upcoming album.

Yep.

I took a bunch of photos when I was in the studio, and they’re available in a photoset on Flickr. But Derek and Andy, together? This is a beautiful sight to my eyes. It’s great to see this, for me. You may not feel the same way, and you know … that’s okay with me.

Redmond: I Hate Using Your Crap

I have a new roommate. Said roommate has a nice Sony VAIO laptop—one of the models I recommend to people who don’t want to buy a Mac. [Hey, some folks don't want to try it. Their loss.] It runs Windows XP.

It took me 20 minutes and a restart just to hook him up to my WPA2 network. Hell, my TiVo only took two minutes to do that.

I think it’s time to look into setting up Electronic Funds Transfer to 1 Infinite Loop. It’ll be easier that way…

Geof’s New Music: 20-26 May 2007

Last week while in Houston, I discovered that Kill Rock Stars had put out a new compilation of Elliott Smith’s recordings, stuff that had been lying around in boxes. Needless to say, I bought it very quickly after that discovery. It is the new release that balances my bootleg bonanza this week:

Last week was above the average of what I’ve been running. [Yes, I'm weary of all the bootlegs myself, but I'm working them off so that I can ease up a bit. And it's quite certain that forcing myself to listen to all these bootlegs makes me more judicious in grabbing new stuff. Except, well, I'm a completionist, so that's hard.]

Okay, so it took me all the way until now to get this done, but hey … I brought in a new roommate on Sunday and then promptly went to Texas for the next three days. :)

Last week was pretty good; the albums were great, and the bootlegs were okay.

My G4 iMac Eats Keyboards

I’ve Googled about a bit and can’t seem to find a solution on this, which is surprising, given the age of the Mac, but:

My G4 iMac seems to eat keyboards.

A few weeks ago, I couldn’t roust the Mac from sleep because I couldn’t enter a password. A nine-character password that uses keys on both halves of the keyboard and four numeric characters yielded one character entry. Thinking the keyboard was just old and shot, I replaced it with a brand new Apple keyboard. Things were fine for a week or so, and then … the same thing happened.

Does anyone know what’s going on here?

Five Years

Well, today is Mother’s Day, so it means that UAH will be having commencement. [They've been doing this for more than the decade I've been associated with the school.] And so I realized this after I cleared out the cobwebs: five years ago yesterday, I graduated from college. I’ve now been out of post-secondary education as long as I was in it. [Ignoring, of course, two brief turns through graduate school.] Even goofier, five years ago today, I in-processed as a full-time, salaried employee. Today, I’ll go in to the office to build charts for a program management review with our customer; tomorrow, I fly to Houston to represent the company.

Seems like it’s all moving a bit fast, but … this is how my life goes most of the time. :)
