Social Network Standoff

Earlier today, I got the inevitable email from Stephen:

Hey mister social sites,

Have you taken a look at LinkedIn? I finally got sucked into it today.

I replied that I had not. Predictably, he invited me. My reply was that I wouldn’t accept his LinkedIn invitation unless he accepted my Facebook invitation of each social networking domain. As a result, we are now both members. [I thought that he'd deign to take me up on the offer, honestly.] Not that I’m ever hard to find in such networks—having a unique name makes me easy to find online—but if you need to find me … it’s gfmorris AT gfmorris DOT net.

[No, I am not on MySpace. I have standards. I hope that my brother won't take that as a slight. :)]

Why is this interesting, other than my glee at getting my favorite Ph.D. in optics onto a site that he regularly dismisses in my presence? Well, my friends have taken to joking lately that I’m going to end up on Madison’s city council in the next decade. I don’t think they understand how much my disdain for politics at most any level grows daily. [And besides, if I'm going to snap and be that stupid, I'm running for the state Legislature.] I’m not really quite to the level of a connector in Tipping Point-ese, but I do know a lot of people. Always sorta have. I think it comes from the military brat thing and having to form a lot of connections quickly and regularly.

    It’s about time :)
Seriously, though — LinkedIn is pretty much the only “social network” site that I’ve actually stuck with. It’s also gotten me some serious business networking contacts and job leads here and there.

I was pretty excited about Orkut in its early days, mainly because it was a product of Google. But it seemed like they never scaled it to acceptable performance levels, and the UI design needed a good overhaul, so I gradually stopped making time to visit. There just wasn’t anything to keep me coming back.

At least with LinkedIn, you have an easily updatable online resume that you can point people at.
