Geof’s New Music: 1-7 Jul 2007
When I’m not starting a shitstorm between one of the Internet’s best Webcasters and one of independent music’s best labels, I’m listening to this new-to-me music:
The Delgados’ Universal Audio.- 13 Apr 1997 [London, England] concert bootleg of Wilco.
- 23 Feb 1999 [Seattle, WA, USA] concert bootleg of Elliott Smith.
- 13 Nov 2005 [Northampton, MA, USA] concert bootleg of Jeff Tweedy.
- 9 May 2006 [Seattle, WA, USA] concert bootleg of Son Volt. Actually, the Elliott Smith and Son Volt bootlegs this week are at the same venue: Seattle’s Showbox. Pretty cool.
- 12 Jun 2007 [New York, NY, USA] concert bootleg of Feist.
- 25 Jun 2007 [New York, NY, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco. [Sadly, I haven't found a bootleg of the show the next night in Brooklyn that Fred Wilson raved about. I'll keep looking ... Wilco in small venues? Awesome.]
Last week was average:
Joe Bassett’s Nothing Hurts Like the Truth. It’s a solid sophomore effort from Joe, who is a friend. I really like “I Would Fall Apart (Without You)”. Three stars.- Ben Folds’s 1990 solo demo tape. It suffers from probably being a true tape, but you can see glimmers of what Ben would become. Two-and-a-half stars.
- 13 Nov 1996 [Santa Monica, CA, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco. This really wasn’t what it purported to be, I fear, unless the radio broadcast was that jumbled. Two stars.
- 14 Apr 1997 [New York, NY, USA] concert bootleg of Elliott Smith. Not the best recording, but it’s Elliott. Three stars, and the rendition of “Thirteen” is a standout.
- 4 Mar 2005 [Chicago, IL, USA] concert bootleg of Jeff Tweedy. Tweedy with a home-town crowd is always good. Three-and-a-half stars.
- 6 Feb 2006 [Lexington, KY, USA] concert bootleg of Son Volt. A great performance gets submarined by a terrible recording. Two stars, and that’s probably being charitable.
- 15 Jun 2007 [Philadelphia, PA, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco. An enjoyable interview set, and the live cuts aren’t bad. Three stars.

Sadly, I am no longer on vacation. :sigh: Ehh, I’m actually ready to go back tomorrow. I’m recharged and ready to go. [Would I take two more weeks off? Sure.] With a new week, let’s bring out the new music:
