Geof’s New Music: 9-15 Sep 2007
I’m gonna call this a light week: six bootlegs and a greatest hits album. [I know, I know ... I'm a completionist.]
Over the Rhine’s Discount Fireworks.- 10 Sep 2002 [Santa Monica, CA, USA] concert bootleg of Wilco.
- 19 Sep 2003 [Salt Lake City, UT, USA] concert bootleg of Elliott Smith. Sadly, this is the last one I have from somesongs.net.
- 22 Feb 2007 [Paris, France] concert bootleg of The Decemberists.
- 3 Mar 2007 [Winnetka, IL, USA] concert bootleg of Jeff Tweedy. I’ve also exhausted the entire Tweedy supply.
22 Apr 2007 [Northport, AL, USA] concert bootleg of Derek Webb.- 26 Apr 2007 [Paris, France] concert bootleg of Feist.
Devendra Banhart’s Cripple Crow. I’m … still trying to take all this in … but I like it a lot. Four stars.-
The Cardigans’ Gran Turismo. Dougal always calls this his favorite Cardigans album, and it’s easy to see why. Three-and-a-half stars—I’m not as much into the latter tracks, which is weird, because I love noise rock like Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but hey. I love how The Cardigans refuse to wallow too much in a genre. - 17 Dec 2001 [San Francisco, CA, USA] concert bootleg of Elliott Smith. It’s a weird show: he plays new (to the crowd) stuff that ended up on from a basement on the hill, so the crowd can’t relate … and then he aborts about half of the old songs that he tries. Also, for a GAMH show, the recording is just sub-par. Two-and-a-half stars.
- 27 Oct 2006 [Champaign, IL, USA] concert bootleg of Jeff Tweedy. A good-but-not-great recording. Three stars.
- 13 Feb 2007 [Hamburg, Germany] concert bootleg of The Decemberists. Sounds like the recording environment was poor, because the levels are cranked way up, with attendant hiss. That said, it’s pretty decent. Three stars.
- 23 Apr 2007 [Berlin, Germany] concert bootleg of Feist. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s tough to bootleg Feist because she is very dynamic with her performances: one song will be quiet, and the next 12dB louder. Given that, this is a solid little bootleg. Three-and-a-half stars.
- 9 Jun 2007 [Lawrence, KS, USA] concert bootleg of Son Volt. Despite being an outdoor show, this sounds very good. Any faults are in the sound guy’s work, not the taper. Three-and-a-half stars.
